Process: Lettering for The Three Billy Goats Gruff

This past June, the publisher Little Brown asked me to hand-letter the title for a soon-to-be-released children's book, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, this version by Jerry Pinkney. Stella LOVES this story so I was extra happy to do the project.

Saho Fuji, the fabulous art director I worked with, sent along a few of Jerry's other book covers for guidance, and from there I created the above sketch. Interestingly, Saho liked the pencil texture because of the way it integrated with Jerry's illustration.

I refined the sketch and sent a few texture options (from left): ink, watercolor, pencil. I was partial to the watercolor textures, but in the end Saho and Jerry liked the pencil drawing best. We had some extra time so I offered to letter the author credit.

After refining the lettering slightly, I added the author credit and then offered three pencil-y texture options: the original pencil work, a pencil texture laid over the inked lettering, and an ink wash. Again, Saho and Jerry liked the original pencil work best.

I love how Saho arranged the lettering and added color. I also love the texture of the pencil drawing and how polished it looks (which of course got me thinking about some side project ideas...). This was a wonderful project to work on and I can't wait to see the book in print!
