Here we are, in the midst of a new semester, which might not be as terrifying as previously imagined. This Spring, I’m studying contemporary art history, writing (memoir+research), artists’ books and visual narratives and taking a general studio class. Oh. And I’m teaching illustration. And helping to run the Book Arts Collective. And there are always other projects, just to spice up the days and nights.

So I’ve been a little busy, but wanted to share this interesting video on Olaf Hajek, an illustrator of many interests and talents, and some interestingness from around the web.

Discoveries in 2009

National Geographic just released their Top Lists of 2009, and my favorite is the Top Ten Discoveries, one of which includes this six-inch barreleye fish with a transparent head. Awesome.

Well, while we’re looking at lists, Wired Magazine recently posted 1,000 Comic Books everyone must read.

More books I haven’t yet read but NPR says we should read are the Year’s Best Memoirs and Nancy Pearl’s Under-the-Radar Books.

Recently, I stumbled across this awesome Design Police Kit which allows you (yes, you!) to become your very own police-person. Or whatever. Anyway, it’s interesting because, while it has a functional purpose, the kit also helps teach you what to look out for in your own designs. I’d recommend taking the kit to your own designs before rounds of editing.

At Behance’s 99% Conference recently, Pentagram designer Michael Beirut discusses how to design and the secret to being happy.

The 99% is a blog dedicated to researching and analyzing the work of the world’s most creative thinkers and then telling…us. This conference, like TED Talks, is a way of pushing ideas into the world. Only, at 99%, the focus is on making creative ideas happen through good design.
